Patient Instructions

One of the most important aspects of the preop nursing process is giving the patient specific instructions on how to prepare for a surgery/procedure.  This frequently includes guidance on NPO requirements, directions to the facility, and what to expect before, during and after the procedure.  In addition, instructions that are particular to a given surgeon and surgery may also be conveyed. 

Studies have shown that verbally communicated preop instructions are not well retained by patients who are frequently focused on other concerns related to the surgery.  In addition, the time spent to convey a long list of instructions and the possibility of miscommunication are all increased with verbally communicated instructions as opposed to written instructions.  Furthermore, it can often take as much as 5 minutes per patient to convey preop instructions verbally.  For a typical facility that cares for 500 patients per month, this is equal to 40 hours per month just on preop instructions!
